A musket is a muzzle-loaded, smoothbore long gun that appeared in early 16th century Europe, at first as a heavier variant of the arquebus, capable of penetrating heavy armor.
While the procedure for loading a muzzle-loading weapon was virtually the same whether it was a musket, rifle or a cannon, there were some differences. The military had a slightly different sequence than did the hunter or militia member.
To load the musket, a cartridge was torn open by biting and tearing off the tip. The powder was poured into the barrel, the cartridge was reversed, and the lead ball was rammed paper-end first into the barrel with the ramrod.
But reloading required you to stop, so it was not done in battle (unlike the infantry). Long story short there was no required or measure reload speed for a pistol. One would expect that given the shorter barrel length that the pistol would be faster. But how much faster- 2/3 the time it took to load a musket or was it even half the time.
